David Beckham, football legend, unveiled his new statue in Los Angeles this week following the opening of a new soccer field for underprivileged youth in LA. However in spite of the good cause behind the event, people were quick to mercilessly mock the statue for looking just like his good friend Gordon Ramsey.
Whilst originally being commissioned to honour the former England captain for being one of the first global sports stars to play in America, helping turn MLS into a respected team, the bronze statue certainly had a hint of frown heavy, sweary Ramsey about it.
The event held at Dignity Health Sports Park had many stars in attendance including former team-mate Robbie Keane, NBA star Kobe Bryant and rapper Snoop Dogg but Twitter users were quick to ruin the seriousness of it but saying Beckham looked like he was ‘standing in front of his dad Gordon Ramsey’.
At least Beckham is not the only one to have a questionable statue made of him. Any football fan will remember the embarrassing sculpture of Cristiano Ronaldo at Madeira airport…the comical expression and complete unlikeness is sure to upset well groomed Ronaldo!
Although the statue may generate a few laughs, it is important we don’t forget the real message, as said by Beckham:
“Taking care of the next generation of soccer stars in this country is really important and we did it in a community that really needed support and a safe environment for children.”
