We love our coffee. It’s how we function, socialize and cure our hangovers.
The possibilities of coffee are endless; black, white, double shot, macchiato, espresso and so on – the list is endless. But how you choose to have your coffee might be just be an indicator as to your personality type. If its black coffee you have, you are probably a psychopath.
This unsettling nugget of information was noted in a study undertaken by the University of Innsbruck in Austria.
In this study, 500 men and women were tasked to note down all the foods they liked best and answer a number of personality questionnaires that measured qualities including narcissism, aggression, psychopathy, and “everyday sadism.”
Results revealed that the participants who reported enjoying foods with a bitter taste were more likely to report “malevolent personality traits” – even when sweet, sour and salty tastes were involved.
These results were confirmed by another similar study using 450 participants.
Black coffee topped the list of bitter foods but others included dark chocolate, radishes, beer, tonic water, and celery (who knew?!). It was this preference for bitterness that was the biggest indicator of psychopathic personality traits…
As Dr Sagioglou explains, eating bitter foods may be “compared to a rollercoaster ride where people enjoy things that induce fear.”
On the flip side, those who scored high on “agreeableness” reported a preference for sweet foods like candy and cake – and a complete dislike for bitter foods *jumps for joy in having a sweet tooth*.
So next time you’re on that coffee date, think twice before you order…
