Ben & Jerry’s just got political

Ben & Jerry’s has launched a brand new, limited-edition ice cream called ‘Pecan Resist’ featuring chocolate ice cream with chunks of white and dark fudge, pecans, walnuts and fudge-covered almonds.

But this is more than just an ice cream, it’s a political statement.

The specially designed tub by artist and activist Favianna Rodriguez has a bold colorful design with a statement that reads, “Welcome to the resistance. Together, Pecan Resist! We honor & stand with women, immigrants, people of color, & the millions of activists and allies who are courageously resisting the President’s attack on our values, humanity & environment. We celebrate the diversity of our glorious nation & raise our spoons in solidarity for all Americans. Take a stand & join those on the front lines.”

The tub was created as a result of their stance against President Trump’s policies that “attack and roll back decades of progress on racial and gender equity, climate change, LGBTQ rights, and refugee and immigrant rights – all issues that have been at the core of the company’s Social Mission for 40 years.”

Not only is Pecan Resist raising awareness, it is also donating proceeds from ice cream to four groups and movements in the US: Color of Change, Honor the Earth, Women’s March and Neta. In today’s volatile political climate, this act will have incredibly impact particularly for younger generations who will grow up in the continued fight against social injustice.

However this isn’t the first time that Ben & Jerry’s has utilised its ice cream for political uses. In 2016, the flavor EmpowerMint was launched to promote voting rights and in 2009, Chubby Hubby was transformed into Hubby Hubby to celebrate same sex marriage in Vermont (where Ben & Jerry’s originated).

Ben & Jerry’s are using their platform to speak up for important matters and minority groups which can only be commended. Fighting for the cause whilst providing some of the best ice cream around is a winning combination!
